Frank Henworth was convicted of the murder of Patrick Clarke 76
He beat him to death at their home on 15 June 1995 with a hammer inside a sock and then tried to make it look like a burglary. He had hit him a minimum of fifteen times.
Frank Henworth was first convicted of the murder in 1996 but a retrial was ordered after it was heard that the judge had made an error in summing up.
Frank Henworth had been a lodger with Patrick Clarke and had killed him to rob him of his pension money. When found Frank Henworth had considerably more money than he should have had on him. Patrick Clarke had just claimed his pension and had been out drinking. Patrick Clarke was due to give evidence against Frank Henworth and there was some evidence of hostility between the two men.
Frank Henworth had a previous conviction for causing death by dangerous driving.
